SFU organizes 18 colourful ceremonies each year and relies heavily on the Convocation website to communicate to the graduands. In its previous state, the website lacked focus and treated the key audience, students, as secondary users.
We began the redesign process by identifying the stages in ceremony planning and the key tasks associated with each stage:
- Apply for convocation
- Confirm attendance and reserve cap and gown
- Attend the ceremony
These key tasks helped structure the site mapping and wireframing process. With the option to modify the main call to action, we have significantly reduced confusion with the application process and have improved the students web experience.
I’ve documented a workflow that allowed the department to present information on the homepage in a more timely manner without compromising the user experience. Instead of using a carousel to feature certain pages, important information remains static on the homepage and is updated according to the planning phase.
Since the redesign, convocation representatives received 40% less inquiries from students about how to confirm attendance and where to pick up the cap and gown.
