Overview:
I had to rebrand and suggest usability changes for the out-of-box campus app by Oracle within 3 weeks. In coordination with our senior communicator, we redesigned the goSFU app to meet current mobile app UI trends while satisfying SFU common look and feel.
Role: User experience designer/researcher, visual designer
Screen 1: Login page
Recommended usability changes:
- Increased text field and sign in button size for easier thumb contact
- Removed unnecessary options and graphics to simplify the login process.
Look:
- Adopted the SFU red as the main background
- Used Roboto by Google font.
Screen 2: Main Menu
Recommended usability changes:
- Log out option is styled differently from the rest of the menu items
- Increased text size and reduced icons for easy readability and scanning
- Added a used ID option, this will show the student their 9 digit ID and class enrollment date.
Look:
- Redesigned icons using Adobe Illustrator
- Background, text and active menu item colour adopted from SFUs web templates.
Screen 3: Class schedule
Recommended usability changes:
- Removed option to view wait listed, dropped, and all schedules. Recommended that these features should be added to the “Course Cart” enrollment feature.
- Changed term button text “2013 Spring” to “View previous terms” link as it more descriptive of the action.
- Organized the layout by day of the week versus course type.
- Added a “more” menu item to the dashboard. This will display all items from the main menu.
Look:
- Redesigned icons using adobe illustrator
- Background, text and active menu item colour adopted from SFUs web templates.
Screen 4: View my Grades
Recommended usability changes:
- Changed term button text “2013 Spring” to “View previous terms” link as it is more descriptive of the action.
Results:
Some of the proposed design was too ambitious to be implemented within the 3 weeks. We proposed a more straightforward redesign that would only require minimal code restructuring for the developer.
The app was launched with still some outstanding usability improvements to be made.
